Details on the first Bhakti session held at Edgware, London on 25 March, 2006
GS Sabha organized for the first time an event named ‘Bhakti’ for our youngsters. The theme behind this event was to make our children aware of different hindu gods, teach them shlokas, Om chanting and narrate moral/ mythological stories.
The event started with an introduction on BHAKTI. Kids from age 3 to 11 participated in the event.
The first session was lead by Gauri Shanbhag. It started with the shloka ‘Vakratunda Mahakaya’. Children were explained the meaning of the shloka and were asked to recite the shloka. The enthusiasm of the kids was quite evident. This was followed by ‘OM chanting’.
Pictures of hindu gods/goddess were shown to the children. Children were asked to identify the gods and were explained the reason why we pray each god.
Then it was time for story telling, where elder kids performed an enactment based on stories from Amar Chitra Katha. A few moral stories were also narrated by elder kids.
After the tea break there was a session on Shloka Recital. The children were shown an animated video of how ‘Lord Ganesha was born’. This was followed by the recitation of the Ganapati Shloka ‘Pranamya Shirsha Devam’ by Rashmi Gajendragadkar. The meaning of the shloka was explained with pictures of Lord Ganesha.
Games were also organized for children.
Regular Bhakti sessions are now held by Gauri and Rashmi at their home. G S Sabha plans to hold a grand BHAKTI session once a year.
